Morgan Street I 2011 – Newcastle
Brief
After allowing murals for a temporary art walk, walkARTbout, The GPT Group decided not only to keep the artworks but to commission more for their empty walls in Morgan Street, Hunter Street Mall. Two artists were chosen to create artworks on one wall, which had an outstandingly positive outcome for the small laneway in Newcastle. The murals have since become attractions for all kinds of positive interactions such as photography shoots, university studies and creating an increase in foot traffic for the area.
Project Information
The largest wall painted as a collaboration in Morgan Street was created by Umpel and Ben Foster. Using a BOOM lift, the artists were able to scale large height, creating an immediate impact. Umpel’s freehand aerosol skills showcase a rainbow colour palette that has since become the backdrop for many creative photography shoots. The work incorporates a Mark Twain quote which has been very well received. Ben Foster’s black and white geometric stencil designs are stylishly patterned with contrast to Umpel’s work. Ben was approached to extended his series into an exhibition at Maitland Regional Art Gallery, as a result of these works.
A video was created by Umpel, documenting the project, which is a service that can be offered for an additional fee. http://vimeo.com/20774768
